This bike is actually underloaded by Shanghai standards

If you look to infinity and you see only people...

...then you know that you are in China. Think about the market opportunities here!

Sunday means shopping in Chinese.

Manhattan of Shanghai

This is a mandatory "tourist" shot :D

Today's wake-up horn...

...came from this beast!

Welcome to Steve

Decided to share my blog space with my roommate Steve. Hoping to see some fun post from him!

Cool thermometer

If I take a look out of my window, I immediately know the temperature and if I can't see it then it means that it's raining. This chimney idea is so cleaver!

This bus takes people to local neighborhoods!

A True local lunch...

...tastes a lot better then it looks. During the past weeks here, I have had only one meal that didn't want go down well (It was Tofu that smelled and tasted like cow shit). Chinese restaurants might look not so good, but the food here is delicious! No more Tsink-Plekk-Pang for me.

Shopping experiences: Fruitshop on the corner

Every street here has it's own little fruitshop. The stuff there is mostly fresh and tasty and it's also extremely cheap. For 1$ it is possible to get a kilo of whatever. I'm still on the half way testing out all the new and interesting things that I haven't got in Europa...and my bottom is still solid! :P

Shopping experiences: Milk in China

When the carton says "Fresh" then it mean that it was milk probably not more then a year ago. Anyway, it's impossible to find ordinary fresh cow milk here, but there are many fancy alternatives! How about "Instant Milk tablets"?

Shopping experiences: WalMart sales

Save money. Live better...or what ever...I was shopping for bread and cola, but got this on the half way to food section. This will be our team official Sunday-shirt :P Locals call me "white giant" here, so a pink daddy-shirt suits well :P
So far I think that WalMart has the best bread choice in Shanghai. Local stores have almost no bread and milk product on their shelfs.

Learning to fly!

After some climbing we managed to get onto the roof of our dorm. The view was royal!

My people!

This is our team. It's really great to be in Shanghai with you! I hope, it's going to be fun and interesting time for us. (Urmas is behind the camera and Sandra is missing)

Shopping experiences: Kiwi chips

How about Lay's with Kiwi? No problem, local TrustMart has it! And it really tastes like Kiwi! Weird stuff...

...but one of my favourite drinks here is Kiwi juice:

Bamboo scaffolding

Most popular scaffolding material in China. They build skyscrapers that way! I think this one is Kazakhstan pavilion in EXPO area.

Friday night fever...

...Chinese style. Dancing events next to public places like supermarkets and parks. I think it's pretty cool to have this kind of events for people who don't have money or who don't want to go to nightclubs. It doesn't matter if you're young or old...just join the crowd!

Enegry saving is popular in Shanghai

It's advertised on TV and in subway. There are solar panels and water heaters on the roofs. Most of the mopeds around here are electrical (which makes it impossible to hear them coming before they hit you :P). Gasoline costs about 1.1$/liter so people prefer bikes and electrical vehicles...but of course, BMW is the symbol of success.

English fails...

I know it's not nice to lauch about it and it's really nice that people are trying to write everything in English, but still...sometimes it's just so funny to read signs here! More to come...

The Hard Stuff...

That's how they call it here...
A bottle (half liter) of vodka (42%) costs 4.90RMB which is about 0.70$

Puzzle no.2

Which button to press, if I want to turn on the heater? I'd never imagine that it might take 4 minutes to solve this one!

Learning Chinese in Finnair airplane...

It's so easy!

Medical check

Today we had the almighty Chinese medical check. I'd heard a lot of spooky stories about it, but had no real idea what it is. First, when we stepped into hospital then some Spanish guys warned us on the door: "Please...please, don't go in there!" ...but we did it anyway. After some discussion we found out that if i'm not going to work with food or in direct costumers service then I don't have to take the anal tests that everyone were so afraid of. I got only blood tests, X-ray, ECG, eyes and ears, general measuring and that was pretty much it. Wasn't that bad at all :P Process was very well organized and fast. I'm still healthy, so probably the needles were clean also. The result was that I'm healthy as hell and ready to start my work here! :)
I'm having hard time to understand Estonian doctors handwriting, but this one is impossible! Maybe one day I will understand what they wrote here :P

My first window view

Nice! First I thought I was back in NYC :D

Our apartment in Shanghai

This is our home for next 7 months. After some IKEA and WalMart shopping we're good to go :)

Arrived in Shanghai

So here we are! Arrived today morning. Weather was almost the same that we had in Estonia when we were leaving, even worse. Took a taxi to Expo Village, got the first small rip-off from taxi driver and now I'm happily in my new home. Feels great!
